1st day of 1st Grade

Brooklyn started 1st grade at West Kearns Elementary on Monday, August 27th. She was pretty nervous about starting a new school and learning Spanish. She had a rough week prior to school starting. All summer she has gotten along great with her sister and played really well with her. Not so much the last week, we started having more fights and disagreements than ever before. She was also more whiny and all around grumpy.

However, after a Fathers Blessing the night before, she woke up ready to go! We couldn't leave the house fast enough!

Eliza was equally as excited for Brooklyn to start school and is excited to start preschool next week.

Brooklyn was so excited for her new Princess Backpack and lunchbox! So far it's really fun for a 1st grader to pack a lunch from home. I've offered her school lunch and she is not even interested, but it helps that all of her friends bring lunch from home as well. They like to compare what they get. The hardest part about lunch for her is she says she never has enough time to eat so she's been finishing her lunch off on the drive home.

Brooklyn was a little more nervous once she actually got to the school. Marty went in late to work so he could be there for the first day drop off. She met her teacher, Mrs. O'Roza and a few other girls in her class. One nicet thing about this Dual Immersion program is that kids come from all over so not too many of them actually knew each other beforehand.

Brooklyn got inline at the back of the line and it took two seconds for her to realize that she was with a bunch of boys. She quickly went to the front of the line with some of the girls she just met.

The girl in front of Brooklyn is Lily and the girl behind Brooklyn in the above picture is Emery. We actually met Emery the Sunday before the 1st day of school at Stake Conference. She is in the Georgetown ward in our Stake and her mother recognized Marty from the Dual Immersion meeting a few months ago. It was nice they were able to meet, but they weren't too comfortable with each other yet. Emery was having a hard time saying goodbye to her mom and Brooklyn was anxiously awaiting two of the boys from her Kindergarten class to arrive (we were fortunate to know they would be there at least). She knew they should be there, but hadn't shown up yet because they were riding the bus.

Right before the bell rang, Harrison and Tyler showed up so she was more at ease to see them and was quick to say goodbye to us.

It was a long day for Eliza and me. Eliza kept telling me to go get Brooklyn. However, the rest of the week was amazing and I was able to get so much done! Plus, my house has stayed cleaner so far. As hard as it is to let her go off to the big world without me around to influence her, it's kind of nice to have a little break as well.

Brooklyn loved her first few days. It's fun to try to piece all the little pieces of the puzzle together by what information she volunteers here and there. Mainly I hear about recess and lunch and about how her teacher speaks Spanish for a long time and she doesn't understand her one bit. They teach English for the first half of the day and Spanish for the rest of the day starting right after lunch. During Spanish time the teacher can only speak Spanish.
She also has become good friends with Emery and we are going to start a carpool now, which will be nice. I'm really happy Brooklyn is enjoying school even if I have no idea what she is actually learning right now. :)
